Even though they had four children under eight years old, his wife Lorna had to go out and seek employment just to put food on the table, let alone service the $50,000 debt they had been left with from the manufacturing business. During this time they fell 4 months behind in rent, had their electricity turned off, the phone was disconnected four times, the car was driven unregistered and many weeks they wondered how they were going to feed the children. David's integrity made him refuse to declare personal bankrupcy.

Lorna had been gifted some shares from her Grandfather, and even from when David and Lorna were married in 1982 they had an interest in the stock market. In 1993 that interest in the stock market turned to desperation for David ... he turned to the futures markets, trading markets such as wheat, gold, silver, Australian dollar, SPI etc. because of their extreme leverage. In the first three months he averaged 13% per month profit, and even though this was on a small account of $10,000 it was massive for them. Then for the next two years he proceeded to lose all their money ... not once, not twice but three times!!
